Tenga Tenga: Can I Help You Carry Your Load?

This video was birthed from a performance conducted in Mbala to remember the Tenga Tenga and their contribution to the war efforts of WWI. By making them the focal point of the war’s memory in my work I aim to create a counter archive which honors their memory and calls for a reimagining of history to better recognize marginalized and formerly colonized people who participated in the war.

No Buju!

An inquiry on the aftermath of police presence and on the UCSC campus during the 2020 Cost of Living Adjustment protests. Buju is a slang word in Nyanja (a language spoken in Zambia) to mean police.

Tenga Tenga in Berlin

What would it mean for the Tenga Tenga to have been able to move freely behind enemy lines? In this project I aim to draw on speculative fiction by placing the Tenga Tenga in proximity to war memorials. In so doing I aim to start a conversation that questions who is remembered through such historic markers.
